Fernando Duran-Alcantar is a visual artist based in San Antonio, Texas, whose work explores the rich traditions, intensity, and artistry of La Charrería, Mexico's national sport and cultural heritage. Originally from Mexico City, Fernando brings more than 20 years of experience in the visual arts, creating highly realistic graphite, charcoal, and painted works that celebrate the beauty of this sport.

From an early age, art became an essential part of Fernando's life. Throughout his school years in Mexico, he was constantly drawing and participating in artistic projects, some of which became permanent installations at the schools he attended. At the age of fifteen, he moved to the United States, where he completed high school and later earned a degree in Studio Art and Art History. Before settling in Texas, he lived in two other states, continuing to develop both his artistic and cultural perspectives.

Working primarily with graphite and charcoal on paper, canvas, and panels, Fernando approaches each piece with a commitment to realism. By utilizing white or minimal backgrounds, he emphasizes the subject, allowing viewers to focus on the emotion, movement, and energy of the moment. His artwork seeks to capture the intensity, adrenaline, skill, and artistry that define La Charrería, while highlighting the deep bond between the charro and the animals involved in the sport.

Although art was his original passion, Fernando took a different creative path in the early 2000s when he became involved in La Charrería through photography and videography. Serving as a formal photographer and videographer responsible for assisting judges with video reviews, he gained unique access to the sport and its participants. This experience allowed him to witness practices and competitions firsthand while learning the intricate rules, traditions, folklore, and dedication required for each suerte when performed by the charros in their respective teams.

His role led him to travel extensively throughout Colorado initially, across the United States including Texas. Over four years of formal leadership responsibility, he served as the National Coordinator of Press and Media, documenting and promoting the sport at various levels. More than two decades behind the camera refined his understanding of composition, lighting, color, movement, perspective, anatomy and many other artistic elements providing invaluable reference material that continues to influence his artwork today.

Fernando remains actively involved in the La Charrería community, regularly photographing events and gathering inspiration for future works. Through both his drawings and paintings, he strives to preserve and celebrate a cultural tradition rich in history and folklore. His goal is to honor the individuals who inspired him while ensuring that the beauty, skill, and heritage of La Charrería can be appreciated by future generations.

Fernando Duran-Alcantar es un artista visual radicado en San Antonio, Texas, cuya obra explora las ricas tradiciones, la intensidad y el arte de La Charrería, el deporte nacional y patrimonio cultural de México. Originario de la Ciudad de México, Fernando aporta más de 20 años de experiencia en las artes visuales, creando obras altamente realistas en grafito, carbón y pintura al óleo que celebran la belleza de este deporte.

Desde temprana edad, el arte se convirtió en una parte esencial de la vida de Fernando. Durante sus años escolares en México, dibujaba constantemente y participaba en proyectos artísticos, algunos de los cuales se convirtieron en instalaciones permanentes en las escuelas a las que asistió. A los quince años se trasladó a los Estados Unidos, donde completó la preparatoria y posteriormente obtuvo una licenciatura en Arte de Estudio e Historia del Arte. Antes de establecerse en Texas, vivió en otros dos estados, continuando el desarrollo de sus perspectivas artísticas y culturales.

Trabajando principalmente con grafito y carbón sobre papel, lienzo y paneles, Fernando aborda cada pieza con un firme compromiso hacia el realismo. Al utilizar fondos blancos o mínimos, enfatiza al sujeto, permitiendo que los espectadores se concentren en la emoción, el movimiento y la energía del momento. Aunque el arte fue su pasión original, Fernando tomó un camino creativo diferente a principios de la década de los años 2000 cuando se involucró en La Charrería a través de la fotografía y la videografía. Como fotógrafo y videógrafo oficial, responsable de asistir a los jueces mediante revisiones de video, obtuvo un acceso único al deporte y a sus participantes. Fernando continúa participando activamente en la comunidad de La Charrería, fotografiando eventos de manera regular y reuniendo inspiración para futuras obras. A través de sus dibujos y pinturas, busca preservar y celebrar una tradición cultural rica en historia y folclore.
