About the Artist Fernando Duran-Alcantar was born in 1976 in Mexico City, Mexico. Fernando started drawing at a young age and his ability was soon noticed by family and teachers. It was in middle school that he realized that drawing was what he enjoyed doing the most. Fernando’s vision is to preserve the culture, history, identity, and folklore of his native country through his paintings. His repertoire honors the richness of his culture and the fascinating folklore of “La Charreria Mexicana.” La Charreria originated between 1531 and 1555 near Mexico City and eventually spread throughout Mexico. The caciques Otomíes, Nicolás Montañéz; Fernando de Tapia, and the teacher Fray Pedro Barrientos were instrumental in the solidification of La Charreria in Mexico. La Charreria is a magnificent display of “suertes charras” where charros show off their artistry and skills with horses and livestock. Additionally, Cinco de Mayo, Mexican Independence Day, and other events inspired his series of paintings that portray traditional rituals of Mexico's pre- Columbian cultures, regional dances, its roots and celebrations. Music has been a part of who Fernando is since he was young. Throughout his childhood and teen years he was surrounded by family and friends who played music which fueled his fascination with musical instruments. Fernando carried with him a desire to learn to both perform and create the music that he hears. In his early 20s he joined one of his church's choirs where he learned to play the guitar. His attitude and interest lead him to teach himself to read and write music. Soon after joining the choir he had the opportunity to participate in various activities expanding his experience through contemporary Christian music in both English and Spanish. After a few years he became in charge of the choir that he had started in and lead it for almost eight years. Music and its place in both Mexican history and Fernando's life has become a representational depiction in his art. Acerca del Artista Fernando Duran-Alcantar nació en 1976 en la capital de México. Fernando comenzó a dibujar desde muy temprana edad y su habilidad fue descubierta muy pronto por su familia y maestros. Fue hasta la secundaria donde se dio cuenta que dibujar es lo que le gustaba hacer más. La visión de Fernando es la de preservar la cultura, historia, identidad y folklor de su país nativo a través de sus pinturas. Su repertorio honra la riqueza de su cultura y el fascinante folklor de “La Charrería Mexicana.” La Charrería se originó entre 1531 y 1555 cerca de la capital de México y eventualmente se extiende por el resto de México. Los caciques Otomíes, Nicolás Montañéz; Fernando de Tapia, y el instructor Fray Pedro Barrientos contribuyeron mucho a la cimentación de la charrería en México. La Charrería es un magnifico despliegue de “suertes charras” donde los charros muestran su arte y habilidades con caballos y ganado. Además, eventos tales como el cinco de mayo, día de la Independencia Mexicana y otros días festivos inspiraron la serie de sus pinturas cuales palpan los rituales tradicionales de las culturas Pre-Colombinas de México, bailes regionales, sus raíces y tradiciones. La música ha sido parte de Fernando desde pequeño. Durante su niñéz y adolescensia se vió redeado de familiares y amigos que tocaban música cual inspiró su fasinación por los instrumentos musicales. Fernando llevó consigo el deseo de aprender a tocar y crear la música que el escucha. A los 20s se unió a uno de los coros de su iglesia donde aprendió a tocar la guitarra. Su actitud e interés lo llevó a enseñarse a leer y escribir música. Poco despúes de unirse al coro tuvo la oportunidad de participar en varias actividades expandiendo su experiencia a traves de la música cristiana contemporanea en ambos idiomas ingles y español. Despúes de unos años se hizo cargo del coro donde comenzó y lo dirigió por casí ocho años. La música y su lugar en la historia de México y la vida de Fernando han llegado a ser una parte integral de su arte. |
